Obituary of Allan Wilson MOGRIDGE

February 3, 1923 – Calgary, Alberta
January 6, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Sadly, Allan Wilson Mogridge passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 just shy of his 98th  birthday.

Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Barbara Delyce Mogridge (nee Miller) and son James Wilson Mogridge. He is survived by his loving daughter Patti Grier and son-in-law Allan Hargreaves and his two cherished grandsons, Michael Grier (Meghan Lindsay) and Thomas Grier (Sarah Massie). Dad will also be missed by the Hargreaves clan; Lorraine, Graeme, Sarah, Audrey, Jack, Ross, Ashley and Hailey. He so loved presiding over our family dinners!

Dad was born in Calgary and remained a proud Calgarian his entire life. He attended Balmoral School and Crescent Heights High School.  After graduation, he joined the R.C.A.F. as a Wireless Mechanic and served with the116 Submarine Patrol Squadron on Cape Breton Island. Following his discharge in 1946 he articled with E.T. Brown Architecture, and during that period designed the Radium Hot Springs. Dad then formed a partnership with Ken Bond and John Clayton (Clayton, Bond and Mogridge Architects, then Bond & Mogridge Architects) and designed the Calgary Airport Terminal.  Dad was highly respected in his field and was the founding member of the Specification Writers Institute of Canada. In 1989, following a successful career of forty-four years, during which he proudly designed many well-known buildings in Calgary, Dad retired and focused on other interests, including researching grain grinding and water pumping windmills in southern Alberta which resulted in the development of Canada’s only Windpower Museum in the hamlet of Etzikom, AB.

Dad loved camping, hiking, fly fishing, windmills and horseback riding.  Both Mom and Dad spent many treasured hours with Michael and Thomas when they were young, exploring Calgary - its parks, museums, the Science Centre, the Zoo, Heritage Park and Fort Calgary and building lasting memories.  No adventure was too big or too small to take on.

Dad moved from the family home in Elbow Park to the Manor Village at Garrison Woods in 2002, as one of their first residents, and has resided there ever since. He quickly became an integral part of the Manors community and sat on the Residents Board for a number of years. The family would like to thank the staff and Dad’s fellow residents at the Manors for their support and friendship over the past 19 years. Your kindness, caring and compassion, particularly during this difficult year of COVID-19 has given us great comfort.  Although we couldn’t visit Dad for extended periods of time over the past ten months, or at Christmas, we knew he was content, well cared for and not alone.

At Dad’s request there will be no service however the family will gather privately to celebrate his life once public health restrictions allow us to do so. If friends so desire, a donation in Dad’s name may be made to Heritage Park, www.heritagepark.ca/donate  or the Calgary Zoo, www.calgaryzoo.com. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Allan’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Allan Mogridge, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
