Obituary of Evelyn May OLIVER

November 15, 1926 - Kimberley, British Columbia

December 23, 2020 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce that our Mum, Evelyn Oliver, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at the age of 94 years.

Evelyn was born in Kimberley, BC on November 15, 1926, the oldest child of Richard and Susan Shannon. After high school, Mum decided not to take a position in the local bank and instead made the move to the big city of Calgary. She lived in residence at the YWCA and enrolled at Garbutt’s Business College. Her first job was in the office of General Motors where she met a handsome red-haired young man, David Oliver. They were married in 1946. Through their sixty-four years together, they enjoyed many annual vacations and retirement trips in their travel trailers.

Evelyn volunteered for many years, first as a Brownie leader in the Girl Guide movement and later at Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre. Mum enjoyed the bus trips organized by Confederation Park, travelling with her best friend June Solmosan. She also visited Detroit, MI, County Cork, IE, and Stockton and Lodi, CA. In each location, she met her cousins, aunts and uncles for the first time. Her parents had emigrated, alone, from Ireland in the early 1920s and there was no extended family nearby as Mum was growing up. She cherished her memories of these trips.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Susan Green (John Boxall) and Kathy Covey; her brother Dick Shannon (Gayle), and nephews, Rich Shannon and Tim Shannon and their families, all of the Calgary area. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband David Oliver and her parents, Richard and Susan Shannon.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre, 2212 13 Street NW Calgary AB T2L 0Z9 or to the CNIB Foundation, 10 – 11A Street NE Calgary AB T2E 4Z3. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Evelyn’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Staff of the Pineridge neighbourhood at AgeCare SkyPointe for caring for Mum during the time she has been in residence there. We are most grateful for their exceptional kindness and attention to Mum and to us during her final days.
