Betty JOHNSON

Obituary of Betty Eileen JOHNSON

May 22, 1927 – Hanna, Alberta
January 28, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Betty Johnson, beloved wife of the late Kenneth Johnson of Calgary, Alberta passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at the age of 93 years.

Betty was born in Hanna, Alberta and grew up on the farm with her father James and sister Helen.  There were many stories including those around riding a horse to attend the one room school in Delia. After graduating from school Betty moved to Calgary and graduated as an RN from the Holy Cross School of Nursing in 1949.  Married to Ken in 1950, they moved into 2205 Bowness Road and together raised four children.

For Betty, her children, and in later life, her grandchildren were always her priority.  Central to this were the many camping and hiking adventures the family enjoyed throughout western Canada and the US northwest.  Most memorable was perhaps the last vacation with the complete family where we drove across Canada to Expo ‘67 in Montreal.  Betty was an accomplished seamstress and knitter and loved to garden, growing enough vegetables every summer to feed the family through the winter.  Once her children were in school Betty returned to nursing, working at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary and the Glenrose Hospital in Edmonton where she retired.

Ken and Betty returned to Calgary when they retired and settled in the Varsity area.  They travelled regularly visiting the UK, Mexico, Australia and Hawaii.  Following Ken’s death Betty continued to lead a full life that included friends, travel and of course family.  Betty was the glue that cemented her family, supporting us all through good times and bad for 70 years.  We will miss you so much mom/grandma.

Betty is survived by her daughters and son, Kathleen (Peter) Daly of Edmonton, Beverly (Richard) Dunn of Calgary, and Bruce (Christina) Johnson of Calgary; her ten grandchildren, Lisa, Terry, Maureen, Janet, Carolyn, Fraser, Perrin, Caitlin, Nicole, and Eric; and ten great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband Ken, son Brian, and grandson Kevin.
