Obituary of Paul ZAREMBA

December 10, 1944 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
January 27, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Zaremba, beloved husband of Joyce Zaremba (nee Pederson), of Calgary, AB, on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at the age of 76 years.

Paul was born in Saskatoon, SK, on December 10, 1944. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts before moving to Calgary, AB, in 1970 with his wife Joyce. He became an elementary school teacher and was in administration for 28 of his 32 years at the Calgary Board of Education, where he finished as Principal at David D. Oughton School.

Paul married Joyce in October of 1966 and they spent over 54 wonderful years together, never apart. Paul loved spending all his summers at the lake with his wife and three children and when he retired in 2002, they spent half the year at Turtle Lake, SK. There, Paul and Joyce were avid gardeners and had an extensive and bountiful vegetable garden. His pride was his tomatoes, especially his cherry tomatoes that he would individually count into the thousands each summer (getting them down to $0.03 per tomato).

Paul’s most memorable vacation was their trip to Las Vegas in 1991 with the Hebners and Hildermans. He was known for his debating style and loved to tell stories to his many neighbours and family at the lake. His favourite quote was “If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong” and he would hand out business cards with it printed on it.

He will be remembered for helping at the Fairview Community Spring Fling events, for acting as a professional shopper for friends and family, and most especially for organizing the annual Turtle Lake Sunset View tailgate, bingo, and dart night parties with prizes galore. He was very proud of their home and garage at the lake and was generous in sharing it with anyone who walked by.  He loved posting a variety of witty signs throughout his garage. Neighbours considered his garage the local hardware store and if he didn’t have a tool he immediately went out and bought two.

Besides his loving wife, Paul is survived by his daughter Audra Lee of Calgary, AB, sons, Scott James (Josée Marleau) of Sturgeon Falls, ON, and Christopher Chad of Calgary, AB; his sisters-in-law, Doreen Henchel, Carolyn Wasilenko (Jim), and Marg Burr (Fred); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and treasured friends.

Words that come to mind when thinking of Paul are:  kind, tenacious, loving, joker, thrifty, amazing, joyful, generous, inventive, intelligent, insightful and social.

Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Paul’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
