Condolences
As owner of A Laptop Shoppe , and Bettie's technology assistant , i was quite busy helping her with her Electronics and computer.
Usually she would call me when the slightest thing was going wrong and she couldn't email or use her TV, i would fix it in 10 minutes and than we would talk politics and resolve most of the problems in our city and beyond for an hour, Bettie was sharp and knew her current events , I always looked forward to our visits and will miss her and her unique personality.
My parents lived in Grimshaw and Jack and Bettie were good friends of theirs, and they became my godparents. We visited them in Calgary over the years. As young kids we played with their fur babies, while our parents reminisced about old stories of many parties, shared picnics, dinners and the great fun they had. (There was the odd “ass” in some of those stories) Bettie was always direct and did not mince her words which initially was not something I was used to, but as I became an adult I learned to appreciate her strong personality. She was truly one of a kind. Six years ago when our daughter moved to Calgary we picked up where we left off and enjoyed our visits with her. Her distaste for many politicians at every level was always a hot topic, her rides in the handicap bus and then the taxis due to COVID to go to the hospital for dialysis always had some interesting humour or how stupid some of those folks could be. Being the only one in the taxi was what made her most content. She was always so grateful for the help she received from her dear friends. Bettie you were truly one of a kind. A woman full of life, direct in every sense, intelligent, hardworking, strong, tenacious, cultured, a hard exterior, but a soft interior at times. Rest easy my friend.
I knew Bettie through Jim Cox. I looked forward to receiving her e-mails - beautiful pictures, doggies, music, politics - all interesting. She was intelligent, a charcter and always very kind. We shared a love of dogs. I well miss her. Condolences to her family and friends.
After not hearing from Bettie for over a week, intuition made me Google her name & as I suspected found her obituary. She had sent an email saying she had been in the hospital a few weeks ago for 10 days. That length of stay sent a red flag to me so I wasn't suprised to read the announcement.
We are from Ontario & met Bettie on a cruise in 2003 when her & her 3 friends sat at our table. We immediately discovered her exterior wall but my husband, the joker he is, managed to break through that wall & a long friendship was started. Bettie & I exchanged emails over the last 18 years where I learned about her wonderful sense of humour. We soon figured out she was a political warrior. My husband saw a banner at a flea market in Florida that read IMPEACH TRUDEAU. We asked if she would like one - she was all over that idea. We mailed it to her then received a huge thankyou. You would have thought she'd won the lottery!
I was constantly telling her to stay safe & well as I signed off on emails. This was a long distance friendship via emails but I felt like she was my next door neighbour. I'm going to miss her notes about the weather in Calgary, the innuendoes of politicians, videos of cute animals especially dogs & power-points of beautiful flowers & opra singers or talented muscians some of whom she had met.
It has been a great treat having Bettie as an email friend all these years after meeting coincidentally at a dinning table on a criuse. Our condolences to her family & friends. REST IN PEACE FRIEND!
Bettie did keep everyone on her toes. In going through some of her files, she actually has file folders labelled "Liberals" and "City Council". Even the picture I chose says "you better stay on your toes around me!" She did not hesitate to speak up and had a great sense of humor. I will miss my calls with her and her emails. She spent her time actively engaged in the political affairs of our City and Country. I even found an application for a Senator position, complete with all her qualifications! She was one of a kind.

They say you meet someone for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
I met Bettie in the mid to late 80’s when we were working together at Parlee. Even though we were 25 years apart and at different stages in our life, we never ran out of things to talk about.
Try as I might to even the score for all she has done for me over the years, I never left her house without a jar of homemade jam, pickles or some kitchen tool she was getting rid of. I will so miss your stories and our visits.
Who is now going to keep the politicians and councillors on their toes in the absence of your colourful letters of complaint?
Rest easy my friend.
It is with great sadness that I write my condolence about my dear friend Bettie whom I knew for 25 years. We worked together at Cook Duke Cox where we enjoyed our work at the law firm and also had good times as well. After working together we continued our friendship. I know I will miss the many visits to her house and all phone calls we used to make.
Bettie was a happy person and always had a story to tell. I will certainly remember our conversations forever and ever.
Dear Bettie, do Rest In Peace!

I will miss my visits and phone conversations with Bette. She always had great stories and opinions to share .I was Bette’s doctor until I retired last year and my staff and I always enjoyed her visits and stories. After my retirement ,we had phone conversations which always ended with a chuckle. I will miss her humour and our talks .
Bette certainly was a colourful character!!
