Obituary of Stanislawa (Stella) PRUCNAL

February 14, 2021– Calgary, Alberta

 

Stanislawa (Stella) Prucnal resident of Spruce Lodge in Calgary, AB, passed away from congestive heart failure on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at the age of 94 years.

 

Stella was born on October 21, 1926, in Bursztyn, Poland, a village formally in Poland and currently belongs to Ukraine. In 1940, when Stella was fourteen she was taken to Siberia with her whole family, the journey took three months and was in a cramped train car. During World War II, the Soviet Union carried out four major deportations of Polish citizens. On the night of February 10, 1940, on the orders of Moscow, the first 140,000 were taken from Poland, many of which were families of military personnel, officials, foresters and railroad workers for the eastern part of the country. One-third of the deportees went to the northern part of Russia to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Komiya ASRS and many others were resettled to Krasnoyarsk Krai and the Omsk Oblast in Siberia. After a few years of captivity, she escaped across the Red Sea to Iran and with the Anders Army and with the then King of Persia she escaped to India, Africa and then Poland. The family was reunited in Jelenia Gora, Poland and through the Red Cross, they were home again in 1946. In Jelenia Gora, Stella met her husband Antoni Prucnal in 1952. Their children soon followed with Marek in 1952, and Danuta (Dana) in 1953. In 1958, they worked in a glass factory and continued to work in glass making even after Ozarow Mazowiecki near Warsaw. In 1981 she and her husband moved to Calgary where they lived peacefully.

 

Stella is survived by her son Marek (Eva) of Poland, her son-in-law Jan Mraz of Calgary; her grandchildren, Agnieszka (Grzegorz) of Poland, Grzegorz (Monika) of Poland, Michael Mraz of Calgary, and Mary Ann (Michael) of Calgary; her great-grandchildren, Karolina, Mateusz, Ola, and Magdalena all of Poland. She will also be remembered by many other family and friends.

 

Stella was predeceased by her husband Antoni, her daughter Danuta (Dana), and her parents, Demitri and Maria.
