Obituary of Dorothy May BEST

May 2, 1927 - Belfast, Northern Ireland
February 12, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

We are saddened to announce the passing of Dorothy May Best, beloved wife of William Kenneth Best, on February 12, 2021 after a short but intense fight with Covid19.

Our dear mother, grandmother and aunt was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on May 2, 1927 and lived an adventure filled and happy life as a strong independent woman for 93 years. Dorothy and Bill were married in Belfast on June 11, 1952 and immigrated to Canada in 1957. After an adventurous ocean crossing with their young family they settled in Southern Ontario, and moved to Calgary in 1977. Many happy years were spent at their home in the countryside outside Bragg Creek. Dorothy loved to entertain and  travel with her wonderful friends. She was an avid bridge player, an adventurous cook, an accomplished needlewoman and most important of all an outstanding mom. She loved to take us on trips (even camping trips which usually involved Dad trying to see how far he could get the car to go on fumes). She bought us books and took us to the theatre and taught us to swim and to enjoy a good strong G and T at the end of the day. Dorothy is the last of her generation to leave us and we will keep them all close always. Dorothy and Bill and her brothers all had a wonderful sense of fun. Their Irish good humour is the greatest gift they gave us all and we are thankful for all they showed us and taught us.

Dorothy leaves her children, Kay (Gord Sawchuk), Peter (Jocelyne), James (Pam); and her son-in-law Steve Jacobs. She was preceded in death by her daughter Susan in 2009 and her husband Bill in 2014.   Dorothy fiercely loved and was very proud of her seven grandchildren, Harry and Sophie, Colin, David and Tobiah and Madeleine and Meredith. She is fondly remembered by her nephews Tony, Peter and Roderick Bryce.

She was beautiful until the end. We will miss her so.
