Obituary of Jean DODGINGHORSE

March 1, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

 

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kokum Jean Dodginghorse of Tsuut’ina Nation, AB, with her family at her side at the age of 87 years.

 

Jean was born Jane Bearhead in Paul Band First Nation, AB on February 3, 1934. She attended Residential School in St. Albert, AB. Once she completed, she pursued a Nursing Career which led her to Calgary and eventually to Tsuut'ina Nation where she would meet and marry her husband, Harry Dodginghorse Sr. and together they raised nine children. Tsuut’ina was her home for sixty-seven years. During her time in Tsuut'ina she would become employed in various departments within the Nation. She would also serve as a Board Member of various Committees, an original Member of the Homemakers Program and her latest being Chairperson for the Elder Advisory Committee. Jean was also an active member of the Tsuut'ina Community and her and her husband were one of the original Ranchers in the Six Mile Coulee Area. In her younger years she participated and played as Pitcher and Shortstop with the Tsuut'ina Ladies Fastball Team and was also a member of the Broomball Team where she met and obtained life-long friendships.

 

Jean is survived by her sons, Marvin (Marie), Randy (Trudy); daughter, Sharon Whitney; brother, Leonard Bearhead; daughters-in-law Frieda and Colleen Dodginghorse; son-in-law Dean Simon; Goddaughter, Coreen Onespot-Rider; sister-in-law, Karen Dodginghorse; sixteen grandchildren, forty-nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

 

Jean was predeceased by her parents, John and Annie Bearhead; husband, Harry Dodginghorse Sr; siblings, Florence, Nancy, Agnes, Olson, John, Wilson, Johnny JR., Stoney and Charlie; four sons, Byron, Duane, Dale and Harry (Jr.) Dodginghorse; two daughters, Elaine Simon and Carrie Dodginghorse; her mother-in-law, Katie Dodginghorse; father-in-law, Jim Dodginghorse; son-in-law Rick Whitney and grandson Adam Simon.

 

Funeral Service will be held at Bullhead Hall on Friday, March 5, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Tsuut’ina Cemetery (Tsuut’ina Nation, AB). Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Jean’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
