Obituary of Mona Ella ROSENBAUM

September 22, 1930 – Calgary, Alberta

March 6, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Mona Rosenbaum née Shapiro, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and loving wife of the late Benjamin Rosenbaum, of Calgary, passed away on March 6, 2021, at the age of 90.

She is survived by her son Eric Rosenbaum, daughter-in-law Chandra Ingram, grandson Gary and many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Gary Rosenbaum and husband Benny.

Mona was born in Calgary. She was the first in her family of two brothers and two sisters to be born in Canada. Her mother Sonia and father Solomon, sisters Rita and Bessie and older brother Albert immigrated to Canada from Russia. Her younger brother Phil was also born in Calgary.

She attended Central High School after which she took business and secretarial courses at Mount Royal College. In 1952 she met and married the love of her life, Ben. In January 2014 they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Mona devoted the 1950s and 1960s and early 1970s to caring for her three boys–husband Benny and sons Gary and Eric. When her sons were older, she entered the workforce as an administrative assistant, notably for the Shaarey Tzedec Synagogue and, later, as a long-time secretary for Calgary B’nai Brith.

She was active as a volunteer and supporter of many organizations in Calgary’s Jewish Community including Hadassah, the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta, Beth Tzedec Synagogue and Temple B’nai Tikvah.

As the last survivor of her siblings, she became the matriarch of the family and was very close to her nieces and nephews and kept in touch with all of them. Nothing made Mona happier than to spend time with family, particularly for celebrations like weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs. She made trips to Ontario and the USA into her 80s, for family milestone events. She also had an active social life and enjoyed playing Mahjong and socializing with friends. She enjoyed inviting people to her home for tea or for meals. Mona particularly enjoyed spending time with her one and only grandson Gary whom she loved fully and completely.

A Graveside Service will be held at the Beth Tzedec Memorial Park, (122 Shalom Way SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Mona’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
