Obituary of Krystyna WOLNY

July 19, 1926 – Zastow, Poland

March 16, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Krystyna Wolny, beloved wife of the late, John Wolny and mother of Stanley Wolny and Mary Taylor of Calgary, AB passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at the age of 94 years.

Krystyna was born in Zastow, Poland and was an only child with no siblings.  Krystyna grew up in rural Poland on a farm. She lived through WWII as a child and was forced into labor picking potatoes by the German occupying army.  She and her mother survived the war and lived in Poland until 1959.  On August 1959 she immigrated to Canada with her mother Katarzyna to reunite with her father and settled in Penhold, AB, where her father worked for the CPR. Her father John introduced her to a polish co-worker named John Wolny and the pair developed a relationship and eventually  married on November 4, 1961.  The couple moved to Calgary and began raising a family.

Krystyna was a devoted mother and a very devout Catholic.  She was active in the Polish Church (Our Lady Queen of Peace Church) where she and her friends would bake and sell their tasty treats after church to raise money for the parish.  Krystyna lived across the street from Holy Name Church and attended mass every day with her husband John.  She also cleaned the church and ensured that all the flowers and shrubbery were watered.  Her faith and religion were extremely important to her and central in her life.  Krystyna would pray several times daily and lived her life in service to God and others.  She was extremely selfless and placed everyone else’s needs first.

Krystyna was an excellent seamstress and liked to knit. She made her own dresses and clothes for her children and later on knitted slippers for all of her grandchildren and family. Krystyna was also an enthusiastic gardener, she had the largest vegetable garden in the neighbourhood and beautiful flowers every year. She was an excellent cook, and everyone always looked forward to her meals.  Krystyna and John also had a brick smoker that he built and they made and smoked the best Polish sausage. Birthdays always included made from scratch cake and potato salad made with love. An important family tradition was Sunday meals after church with the whole family every week. Later in life, Krystyna and her husband John enjoyed travelling to the Dominican Republic and Hawaii for vacations with their children’s families.

Krystyna will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Lisa Wolny; and their children, Sydney, Zachary, Luke, and Michael Wolny; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Mark Taylor, and their children, Candice (Chris), Ashley (Braiden), and Joshua Taylor (Angelique). She was predeceased by her husband John, mother Katarzyna and father John.
