Obituary of Esther DEPATIE

March 9, 1918 – Calgary, Alberta

March 16, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Esther DePatie of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the age of 103 years.

Esther was born on March 9, 1918, in Calgary, AB, the fifth of six children to Henry and Elizabeth Luft, who came to Canada from Saratov, Russia, in 1912. Esther lived in Calgary her whole life, and, in 1936, she married Victor DePatie. They would have two sons, and their marriage would last 64 years until Victor’s passing in 2001.

Esther worked at Palm Dairies for many years, and upon retirement, Esther and Victor spent many winters in Hawaii and then Arizona, enjoying the sun and making many new friends. They loved to spend time on the Bow River fishing, and when there was a social occasion with dancing, they would definitely dance.

Esther was a natural athlete, and sports played a large part in her life – from stopping grounders as a shortstop in the Western Canada Ladies Softball championship in 1948 to being an accomplished golfer in her later years. Esther had an adventurous spirit and competitive nature. She was an avid card player and was always the first to finish the New York Times Crossword puzzle (in pen, of course).

Esther is survived by her two beloved sons, Ronald (Lauralee) and Arthur; grandchildren, Ronald (Cindy), Richard (Sue), Douglas (Corinne), Gordon (Leslie), Christine (Dean), Michael (Holly), and James; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Esther had a full, long life, filled with family and love. She was predeceased by her husband Victor, siblings, Henry, Elizabeth, Jacob, David, and Fred; daughter-in-law Irene DePatie, and two great-grandsons, Grant DePatie and Douglas DePatie.

We wish to thank the staff at Bethany Harvest Hills for the gentle consideration you provided to Esther over the past five years. Your kindness and care did not go unnoticed. You truly are a great team.

At Esther’s request, there will be no formal service. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed on Esther’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
