Obituary of Robert (Bob) Bruce James CARSWELL

October 5, 1954 – London, England

March 17, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Bob Carswell of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at the age of 66 years.

Bob was born in London, England, on October 5, 1954.  He grew up in Whitby, Ontario and moved to Calgary in the early 70’s.

He had many passions in life, none more evident than his love for music and skill for woodworking. Around the house, Bob often had a guitar in his hand and a project on the go. He was employed by Cambium Woodwork and in his early 50’s, Bob went back to school to get his Journeyman Cabinet Makers certificate. Bob’s creations from wood were quite remarkable and we are fortunate to have memories of his skill in the pieces he has left for us. His talents were also evident in the construction of many items in his home, and the homes of his loved ones.

Bob enjoyed outdoor activities including skiing and golfing. He particularly enjoyed his annual Labour Day camping trip with his partner, Laurie, even during the most frigid temperatures. Another favourite pastime was barbecuing, which he did during all seasons.

Bob’s most memorable vacation was hiking the Inca Trail in Peru.  As this trip had been a dream of his for some time,  he was very proud of this accomplishment.

Although he had no children of his own, he was a very loving and supportive stepdad. He was often found chasing around his grandchildren, showing his softest side when needed most. He will forever be loved by those closest to him.

Bob was a man of few words, but you always understood what he meant.  His quick wit and sense of humour will be greatly missed.

Bob is survived by his partner Laurie Lyman and stepson David Taylor of Calgary, Alberta; stepdaughter Blayne Taylor (Ryan Djakovic) and grandchildren Victoria, Ava, Theodore and Natalia Djakovic of Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Bob is also survived by his brother Tony Carswell, of Whitby, Ontario and niece Christine; sister Pat Carswell (Brian Dau) of Calgary, Alberta; and brother-in-law Ken Toffan of Kendal, Ontario.  Bob was predeceased by his parents Fay Sturgess and Bob Carswell and stepfather Don Sturgess, all of Whitby, Ontario; and his sister Sylvia Toffan.

A family gathering will be held at a later date at which time Bob’s cremated remains will be scattered.    If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca.
