Sister Thérèse ROUILLER

Obituary of Sister Thérèse ROUILLER

July 17, 1931 – Fribourg, Switzerland
March 22, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Sister Marie-Thérèse Rouiller (Jeanne Thérèse), f.c.J., died peacefully at Providence Care Centre, Monday, March 22, 2021 in the presence of some of her Sisters FCJ.

She was born in Chêne- Bourgeries, Switzerland on July 17, 1931. She was the sixth of seven children born to her parents, Charles and Mathilde (Déglisse) Rouiller. She entered the Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus in England on January 2, 1949 and was given the name Marie-Mathilde. Sr. M-Mathilde made her first vows on October 7, 1951 and shortly afterwards travelled to Combermere, ON where she did cooking and housework for community and boarders alike. Hard work and happiness went hand in hand. In 1960 she moved to Toronto to manage household affairs. Once changes from Vatican II were implemented, Sr. Thérèse studied at a business college and achieved a Cleritype Diploma. That enabled her to work as a school secretary. She was at a bilingual school, St. Philip Neri which was transferred to St. Noel Chabanel. There she loved the interaction with people.  Sister's next mission was to Sacred Heart Convent in Calgary in 1981. The following year she offered to go to Sierra Leone and stayed there for one year. On returning to Calgary she was named supervisor of kitchen and staff of the FCJ Christian Life Centre. In 1985, feeling called to pastoral work, she trained under Bro. Leon and took a course in Ottawa. She then volunteered at Fr. Lacombe Nursing Home. As some nursing training was soon required, she studied to be a Nurse Assistant and loved working and being with the people at Fr. Lacombe. She resigned in 1992 and focused on serving the older Sisters at Sacred Heart Convent. In 2001 she spent eight months in Lethbridge and four in Queenswood, Victoria, BC. She was missioned to FCJ house on 8 Ave. NE in 2002 and continued caring for the older FCJs at the convent. When health matters necessitated time for recovery in 2006, she moved to Holy Cross Manor and in 2008 to Fountains of Mission where she happily resided until Sept. 2020. Her failing health then indicated the need for full time care. Sr. Thérèse was ever so grateful that Providence Care could accommodate her. She experienced wonderful care from the staff and great kindness from other residents near her. Her nieces and their families as well as all of her FCJ Sisters thank God for the gift that Sr. Marie-Therese was to all whose lives she touched.

A Private Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here. Donations in her memory may be made to the FCJ Christian Life Centre.
