Obituary of Sylvia Jane VERBURGT (nee Görlitz)

July 27, 1940 – Jakarta, Indonesia
March 24, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta
Much Loved Spouse, Mom, Sister, Tante, surrogate Grandma and Friend

It is with deep-felt sorrow we announce Sylvia Verburgt’s passing on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at the age of 80 years; a life well-lived, yet too short.

Sylvia’s life journey included living in Indonesia, Holland and, lastly, Canada (Calgary, AB). Here she worked for the Scotia Bank and was proud working for the Royal Bank of Canada. She retired in 2004, after 21 years. A great milestone and a new phase which she wholeheartedly embraced!!

Sylvia had great style and flair, exemplified in the perfect attire, no matter what the occasion. She loved plants and flowers and had an enviable Green Thumb (also her favourite colour). A culinary wiz, her tasty dishes and “concoctions” were a delight for all that were the recipients. She loved animals and was a long-time contributor to the SPCA and Animal Wild Life Foundation, not to mention her complete devotion to Sully the Schnauzer.

Sylvia and Peter loved travelling. Highlights included a cruise on the Holland American “Westerdam” and a favourite destination, Hawaii. Her artistic flair was illustrated in her needlepoint, crafting and a wholly unique version of scrapbooking! Sylvia possessed a wonderful sense of humour, sprinkled with a little mischief and disarming smile.

She leaves many behind who love her dearly. Peter, her loving husband of 55 years and her daughter Patricia and her husband Ian Morrow. We miss you so much, Mom! In the Netherlands, Sylvia is also survived by her brother Richard and sister-in-law Ute; her sister Thea and brother-in-law Piet; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Each whom she loved and treasured very much.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life for Sylvia will take place at a later date. These plans will be communicated by the family, and updated on Sylvia’s obituary on the McInnis and Holloway website. Condolences, memories, and photos may also be shared and viewed on Sylvia’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Sylvia Verburgt, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB T2A 3V9, Telephone: 403-248-8585.
