Norman (Norm) HJORTH

Obituary of Norman (Norm) Edsol HJORTH

March 10, 1928 -  Bromhead, Saskatchewan
April 3, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Norm Hjorth, beloved husband of Isobel (Laurie) Hjorth (nee Harvey) passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the age of 93 years.

Norm was born in Bromhead, Saskatchewan, on March 10, 1928. He began his first adventure early in his life when he joined to serve his country in the Canadian Armed Forces.  He proudly served for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1970. During this time he traveled the world, made many life long friendships and collected numerous stories and memories along the way.

He married the love of his life, Laurie on December 3, 1960.  Being a military family, they started their lives together in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and had many posting across Canada and finally settled on an acreage near Laurie’s family homestead in Rivers, Manitoba. There they raised their family with lots of love and laughter and gained many more lifelong friendships.  They had many moves along the way but finally settled in Calgary to be closer to their family.

He was a respected and proud member of the Canadian Legion and continued to support the organization until his death. Norm was known as “Poppa” to all children who visited his home. He was known for saying ‘yes’ to all their requests; be it a DQ ice cream treat, a game of cards, or to change the channel to watch a kids show instead of the current hockey, baseball, or football game.  To Norm, happy children were the most important gift in life, and he always would do his best to make them laugh and smile.

Norm loved to play card games, and mostly loved to win.  He played cards daily right up to the end.  He taught all kids to play his favourites, crib and bridge, and entertained himself with a game of solitaire if he could not find a partner.

Norm was Mr. Fixit and loved to tinker in his garage and workshops.  He enjoyed making pieces of furniture for family and friends and would try to fix everything, often on the kitchen table; even if it was not broken.

As Norm would say “See you in the funny papers.”

Besides his adoring wife Laurie, Norm leaves behind his son Harvey (Laura) Hjorth (Kelly, Kristy, Cole); daughters, Coleen Keller (Chelsey, Jesse), Norma (Tom) Cartwright (Rebecca, Robyn), and Lori-Anne (Pete) Florchinger (Kenya); sister Colleen (Larry) Berg, and numerous nieces and nephews. Norm was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Gladys (Mingle) Hjorth; his brothers, Wesley and Maurice Hjorth, and his sister Bernice Campbell.

Norm will be greatly missed, and he is forever in our hearts. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, https://legion.ca/donations. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Norm’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Norm Hjorth, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
