Obituary of Louise Ingeborg SCREATON

November 26, 1926 – Nanton, Alberta

April 9, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Louise Ingeborg Screaton, beloved mother and grandmother, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2021 at the age of 94 years.

Louise was born on November 26, 1926, in Parkland (Nanton), Alberta to father Trond Berger and mother Gunhild Greftegreff Berger. Louise attended Mount Royal College in Calgary following graduation from Nanton High School. She then followed her dream of living in a 'big city' by moving to Winnipeg, where she studied Home Economics at the University of Manitoba. Here, she met many lifelong friends, and most importantly, her future husband, Sid Screaton. The two of them married in 1952. Two children, Gail and Jim, followed.

Louise was a wonderful homemaker, Mom, and Grandma, and an accomplished seamstress and cook. A brilliant baker, her pies and birthday cakes were special family favourites. Her garden was always a source of pride, a riot of colour with blooming roses and so many other bright flowering plants.

She was truly passionate about the Arts. She loved theatre, music, and art, and was a talented painter and sketch artist herself. After the family's move from Winnipeg to Toronto in 1966, she participated in art classes, and then became an involved and enthusiastic member of the Etobicoke Art Group.

Travelling was another of Louise's loves. With Sid, she traveled to their ancestral homelands of Norway and Britain, and enjoyed numerous sun-soaked Caribbean cruises. In North America, they visited nine provinces, and all 50 states! She eagerly participated in tours with her many Art Group friends, with the South of France being a favourite destination.

Those who met Mom knew that she could befriend you in seconds, such was her gregarious nature. Her family was often amazed at the ease with which she made new friends. Conversations with Louise were rarely short ones! Her sunny disposition will be missed.

Left with the very best memories of Louise are daughter Gail Screaton and husband John Maclachlan of Richmond, BC, son Jim Screaton and wife Heather of Calgary, AB, and grandchildren Elaine Rathbone (Dallas) and Alan Screaton (Ashley Whitley). She is fondly remembered by cousins, nieces, and nephews in Norway, Western Canada, and the United States. She was predeceased by husband Sid in 2010, and by her parents. The caring and compassionate staff of 5th floor Bow View Manor, which was Louise's home since 2016, are thanked by her family for the attention and friendship that they gave to her. No service, by request. Honour Louise in your own way, by living your life well, befriending others, appreciating art and nature, and remembering your own special times with her...
