Obituary of Ronald (Ev) Everett SQUIRE

January 27, 1924 – Unity, Saskatchewan
April 30, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ronald (Ev) Everett Squire of Calgary, AB. He passed away peacefully on Friday, April 30, 2021 at the age of 97. He was predeceased in February by his loving wife of 70 years, Katherine Squire. Everett is survived by his brother Gordon Squire, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Everett was born in Unity, SK, and as a young child was raised on a farm.  Ev and his brother were inseparable. They roamed the farm on their old white horse, shot slingshots and played by the lake. When the Depression hit, the farm dried up, and life became very challenging. Fortunately, Ev was able to complete his high school education in Edmonton, graduating from Strathcona High School in 1942.

One of Ev’s first jobs was working on the Alaska Highway which was dangerous and challenging, and for which he was awarded a Meritorious Service Award. He then enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy serving active duty until 1945. Everett was admitted to the University of Alberta with scholarship funding from Veteran’s Affairs, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering in 1950. While in university Everett worked summer jobs for Luscar Coals Limited. A very stylish young woman working in the small town caught his eye.  Kay, reluctant at first about dating a younger man, soon became quite smitten. Immediately after Everett’s graduation, they married and moved to Luscar, AB, where Everett began full time employment with Luscar Coals Limited. He was always learning and continued to work on a variety of certificates throughout his career, including his Mine Surveyor’s Certificates, and a Diploma in Engineering. With a move to Calgary, Everett began a thirty year career, serving in many departments within Shell Canada, retiring in 1983. He was a life long member of APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta).

Most importantly, Everett was the epitome of a true gentleman and a devoted husband.  He was interested in others, had a very generous spirit, and was always ready to assist family, friends and community.  He especially enjoyed the outdoors and spending time on the farm in Drumheller with nieces and nephews. As a couple, Ev and Kay were full of fun, very social, and always entertained with flare and generosity. They loved sharing their hillside home and their award-winning yard of flowers, hosting many stayovers with friends and relations, with the highlight being the nephews and nieces. In later years their story telling always included memories of these times.

Ev will be greatly missed by his friends and loving family.

As per Everett’s wishes, there will not be a funeral. He will be interred in Drumheller, AB, at a later date. Condolences and memories may be shared and viewed on Everett’s obituary at www.McinnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Everett Squire, a tree will be planted in the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
