Eileen EKVALL (nee Wilson)

Obituary of Eileen Delphia EKVALL (nee Wilson)

Eileen Delphia Ekvall passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 15, 2021, in Calgary, Alberta.

Eileen was born on December 11, 1932 to Sidney and Mary Wilson in Keystown, Saskatchewan. She grew up on the family farm near Keystown. After attending the Fairview one-room schoolhouse, she completed high school at Luther College in Regina and then went on to complete her nursing training at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina. She married Ron Worthington in 1956, and moved to Calgary where her three children were born.  Once her children were all in school she returned to nursing, and the last years of her career were spent working in the field of infertility at the University of Calgary. In 1984 she married Herb Ekvall and together they enjoyed curling, gardening, and travel.   Eileen’s favourite adventure was her trip to Africa, which she remembered with great fondness for the rest of her life.

Eileen was a founding member of the Calgary Winter Club. She enjoyed curling for many years as well as bowling and bridge. In addition, she was a member of the Fifth Dimensions Hiking Club and she spent many happy days on weekly hikes, as well as some longer trips organized by this group. Through her hiking, her love for the prairies became equalled by her love for Alberta’s mountains. She was also a long-time member of St. David’s United Church.

Family was the top priority for Eileen. She was a loving babysitter for all of her grandchildren. Time spent at Grandma’s house (basement games, playing in the park, Easter egg hunts, Sunday and holiday dinners) will be cherished by all. She was incredibly proud of her entire family! This past year has been very difficult for the family, as COVID restricted Eileen’s ability to be with her loved ones. She remained positive throughout, but greatly missed being able to be together.

Eileen’s final years were spent at the Edgemont Retirement Village where she made many new friends and enjoyed her time walking, going on bus trips and playing games. Our family would like to thank all of the staff of The Edgemont for their incredible care and support of Eileen.

She will be forever remembered and cherished by her children, Bonni (Dave) MacKenzie, Lesli (Maher) Nessim, and Patrick (Kathy) Worthington; as well as her eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Kevin), Rhonda (Jeff), John (Kathy), Shereen (Deji), Christopher (Kristy), Timothy (Tara), Sean, Calvin; and eight great-grandchildren, Claire, Ronan, Ashton, Cooper, Halle, Lionel, Silvia, and Ada. She will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Herb Ekvall, parents, Sid and Mary Wilson, and sister Peg Fenwick.
