Obituary of Genevieve (Genny) Victoria POWELL

Genny Powell, beloved wife of the late Steve Powell, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at the age of 93 years.

Genny was born in Rosetown, SK on February 17, 1928, to Joseph and Marie Louise (Lavigne) Letourneau. For her elementary education,  she attended the convent in Biggar, Albermarle country school south of Rosetown, and then St. Joseph’s Convent in Rosetown,  graduating grade 12.  She then entered nurses training at Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse. Through the years she worked in her profession at Holy Cross Hospital in the emergency room as the supervisor, the Rosetown Medical Clinic, C.I.L. Company, Calgary and in later years at Trinity Lodge. She was involved in the Holy Cross Alumni, serving on the executive; and volunteered at her granddaughter’s elementary school, assisting the children in their reading program.

She enjoyed doing all types of crafts - beading, petit point, cross-stitch, sewing, always doing everything impeccably. Genny also enjoyed baking and especially making chocolates at Christmas which the recipients appreciated! 

Genny married Steve Powell on October 29, 1955. Together they enjoyed travelling to Hawaii with their family and later Genny spent many holidays travelling to Palm Springs, CA, which she always remarked was “paradise”.

Genny is survived by her daughter Cathy (Kevin) Philipow, granddaughter Amanda, of Calgary, AB; and Marie Powell, of Calgary, AB; sons, Kenneth, Brian, of Calgary, AB and Tom (Kathy), of Cochrane, AB. She is also survived by her brother Bert (Grace) Letourneau, of Olds, AB and sister Lucy (Richard) Owens, of Red Deer, AB, sister-in-law Fran Letourneau, as well as numerous other nieces & nephews and many Alumni friends. Genny was predeceased by her husband Steve, parents, Joseph and Marie Louise Letourneau; and brothers, Edmond, Paul and Ron.
