Obituary of Valerie Jean PENNY (nee Johnk)

Val Penny of Calgary, AB, passed away in the comfort of her home on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at the age of 58 years, after a difficult battle with cancer.

Val, born in Calgary, AB, on June 3, 1962, was a woman of exceptional character.  She took great pride in many things; Her ability to overcome her battles with addictions; her desire and successes in rebuilding her relationships with parents, children and grandchildren; her crafty skill-sets in repurposing things like posters or T-shirts and turning them into photos or pillows; her position as shipper/receiver with Parts Canada Inc. and last, but certainly not least, Val was especially proud of her children and grandchildren.  Val, a lover of all, lightened every life she walked into.

Val’s most memorable vacation was when she and her kids went to Miami for The Kiss Kruise in 2018. Once she heard that her favorite band had a cruise, she was determined to join The Kiss Army on that voyage, and was so happy that her kids were with her on that trip. It was the first family trip they all had together.  She was always talking about this trip and the wonderful memories they had made together at that time.

Val had many favourite activities and hobbies in her life; Unicorns, rock & roll music, live concerts, superheroes, action movies and theatres with her loved ones.  One of her favorite rock & roll songs was “I love it loud” by Kiss. Some of our personal favorite lyrics from this song that hold a true descriptor to Val are “I could never be tamed, better believe it.”

Val will be most remembered for her unreserved, caring heart and her love for all the lives she touched.  She had an unexplained love for anything unicorn, but we come to understand that she herself was a unicorn, when we begin to see all the lives she impacted in the most magical way.

Val is survived by her daughter, Kristen Chandler, her son, Steve Penny, and her grandchildren, Emma and Hailey Chandler, all of Calgary, Alberta. Val was predeceased by her Father Clarence Johnk, and Mother Marjorie Johnk.
