Obituary of Richard Leslie BASCOM

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Richard Bascom of Calgary, AB, on Friday, June 4, 2021, at the age of 80 years, after a short battle with cancer.

Richard grew up in Ponoka. A man of many passions, he was an avid sports and outdoor enthusiast. Known to many as ‘Mr. B’, he enjoyed playing and coaching hockey, baseball and boxing. He also spent a lot of time outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting with his dad and brother. Richard came to Calgary with his young family where he started a career as a parts technician in the heavy-duty truck and trailer industry. He worked for Neils Trailer for many years, and then Fort Garry Industries, until he retired in 2008. Richard was an active member of the MnM Outdoor Club, enjoying hiking and cross-country skiing with all the friends he made there. Being an avid swimmer, Richard could regularly be found swimming laps anywhere he could find an open lane and won medals in seniors swimming competitions all across Alberta.

When Richard was not in the water, he often would be found in his garden tending his flowers and took a special interest in growing many different varieties of roses. Richard shared his love of life everywhere he went with everyone he met. His passing has left a void in the lives of all that knew him and he will be greatly missed.

Richard is survived by his son Darryl, daughter Terry (Allen) Holmes; grandchildren, Alec (Becca), and Lexi (Mike); two great-grandchildren, Kristopher, and Aurora; his sister Della, and brother Murray.

Richard was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy in 2018.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
