Obituary of Rodney Clayton STEWART

August 12, 1928 – Killam, Alberta
June 13, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Rod C. Stewart on the evening of Sunday, 13 June 2021. He was 92 years old plus 10 months. That would be 33,908 days.

Born and raised on the farm 1 Km NW of Killam, AB as one of five boys (Charles, George, Lloyd, R.C., and Doug) of George S. Stewart (d. 1968) and Lilly (d. 1980, nee Nichol ). It is also worth noting that George was the son of Alberta’s 3rd Premier Hon. Charles Stewart (d.1946) who had homesteaded the farm at Killam in 1906.

Rod met and soon after married Eileen Patricia Stewart (d. 25 Sept 2000, nee Dickson) in Killam, AB on Easter Monday 11 April 1955 and stayed together for 46 years until her passing. Greg (1959), Russell (1961), Christine (1968) and grandson Quinn will forever miss these two wonderful parents who sacrificed endlessly for far too long! Dad then remarried on 14 February 2003 to Edith Blackett and they lived comfortably sharing generously with all of the combined families. Together they travelled internationally enjoying many adventures. They were for many years active members of the Glencoe Club where he was an avid curler.

Rod was a dedicated employee of Imperial Oil Ltd working first in Edmonton from 1953 and then transferring to Calgary in July of 1972 when the head office was moved. He was involved in project budgeting and planning in his latter years. Retiring in June 1986 after 33 years of service he went on to a second career of Lucky Pensioner on the company dime for another 35 years. He proved to be very successful at this venture also! Rod was also active for 15 years in the Esso Annuitants Assn. skiing and enjoying the company of his friends. Every summer for over 60 years were spent at Upper Mann Lake where a beautiful Lake home was developed in 1981.

Starting with no post-secondary academic credentials he is certainly remembered for the tenacious determination he applied to building up several businesses while being full time engaged with Imperial. He developed Stewart Manor Apts in Killam in 1968. In Calgary and Edmonton his companies held a substantial portfolio of real estate winding that up in the 1990’s. Through the 1980’s he controlled an insurance brokerage operation subsequently sold. Then it was on to the stock market and that became another passion practiced successfully ever since. He did it all! Accounting, taxes, budgeting, painting, plumbing carpentry and more. He wore the hat of trades and professions alike with confidence. No one can remember him ever taking a “sick” day. He was a man of good taste and cultivated style.  A life well lived with service and generosity. He remained a long serving supporter and parishioner of St Peter’s Anglican Church for decades. It came as a peaceful end to a long and productive life.
