Obituary of Bruce Ralph OGILVIE

January 12, 1945 – Halifax, Nova Scotia

June 20, 2021– Calgary, Alberta

Bruce Ogilvie, beloved husband of Maureen Ogilvie (nee Hughes), Airdrie, AB, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the age of 76 years.

Bruce was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 12, 1945. He grew up in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia along with his four sisters, where he graduated from Parrsboro Regional High School in 1963. After high school the big cities were calling, he lived in Halifax and Toronto before settling to work for Bell Canada in Montreal for the next 10 years. It was in Montreal he met Maureen, they married in 1968 and spent the next 53 years together.

In 1975, Bruce, Maureen and their two young children made a big move to Calgary where together they created a loving home for not only their two children but anyone who walked through their door. Bruce continued to work in the telephone business and during his 20 years with AGT/Telus he cultivated many lifelong friends. In 2013, Bruce and Maureen sold the family home in Calgary and made a move to Airdrie. Their strong sense of family made the move with them and they continued to welcome family and friends into their new home.

Bruce was a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand which is evident in the gift of his time and skills. His helping hand was always offered to family and friends, whether it be home renovations, building a fence or helping with harvest. He volunteered with the Alberta Fish and Game Association, City of Calgary Golf Course and delivered Christmas hampers for the Airdrie Food Bank. He was an avid golfer and one would often find him on the golf course on a warm sunny day. He enjoyed curling, playing baseball, watching his beloved Bluejays and the UFC.

Bruce accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of walking 15,000 steps every day. His pride in celebrating the achievements of his wife, daughter, son, son-in-law and three grandsons brought him pure happiness. Bruce revelled in watching his grandsons play hockey and baseball and teaching them to golf. Vegetable gardening was a passion and his family will especially enjoy the vegetables he planted for them this year. Bruce loved going out for morning coffee with a good friend and, of course, a muffin heated to precisely 8 seconds.

Yearly vacationing in Mexico or Phoenix was a highlight for Bruce. One of his most memorable holidays was a trip to Japan to visit his son. Another unforgettable holiday full of laughter and memories was Bruce and Maureen’s 50th wedding Anniversary fishing trip to Campbell River with his entire family. The laughter and memories from this trip will never be forgotten.

Bruce will be remembered most for his smile, kindness, sincere generosity, positive attitude, perseverance and sense of humor. Bruce loved a good joke! He will be missed as a heartfelt friend who put people at ease and helped generously with his time. His deep love for his family has always been and will forever, be present and felt. There is no greater memory than the sound of Bruce's laugh.

Besides his loving wife Maureen, Bruce is survived by his son and his partner, Mark Ogilvie and Carolyn Garneau of Vancouver, British Columbia, his daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine Ogilvie-Ellis and Gordon Ellis of Olds, Alberta; and his three grandsons, Dylan, Christian and Ryan Ellis of Olds, Alberta.

Bruce is also survived by his two sisters Ruth Bodie (Steve) of Calgary, Alberta, and  Anne Keirstead (Mort) of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bruce was predeceased by his parents Captain Ralph Ogilvie and Charlotte Ogilvie; his sisters Irene (Ogilvie) Pettis and Joyce (Ogilvie) Knowlton.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
