Obituary of David JUMAGA

March 6, 1941 – Kamsack, Saskatchewan

June 16, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, brother and uncle David Jumaga. David left this earth to a new life with the Lord on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the age of 80 years.

David was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, on March 6, 1941 to Walter and Ann Jumaga. He grew up in Veregrin, where the family owned a general store. David attended Veregrin Public School grades 1 to 8, continuing his grades 9 and 10 at St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton, and finished his grades 11 and 12 in Kamsack, at the Kamsack Collegiate, where he excelled in drama and girl watching.

He went to Calgary and worked for a short bit on the CP Railway. From there went on to be a trucker for Labatt’s Brewery. He heard of work up north with Alberta Forestry so travelled north and worked near High Level, as a look out for forest fires. He loved the northern country, outdoors- hunting and fishing.

While up around Peace River and Nampa, he learned that there was a shortage of teachers, so he went back to Edmonton to acquire his Teaching Certificate. He had a job waiting for him in Nampa. He found that teaching was what he liked. In a couple of years he went on to get his Bachelors Degree in Education.

This career took him to Kimberly B.C. and Prince George, where he became a vice principal and principal. He enjoyed the administrative end of education, so went on to get his Masters Degree from Calgary and Victoria Universities. His first job as Superintendent of Schools was in the Castor district of Alberta.

He moved to Edmonton and took a job as administrator with Alberta Health. Shortly after he took a position in Vegreville, from which he retired.

He then moved to White Rock, B.C. where he spent 20 years, it was the place of his dreams. He loved walking and jogging along the shoreline of the ocean and the great weather. He said he’d never use a snow shovel again.

In 2020 his health started to fail and in February 2021, his sister Mary-Jane took him to her home in Calgary. After 3 months his health improved and he decided to go into Rocky Ridge Retirement Community, where he had his own suite and quite liked it. Especially the food and most friendly staff and residents; but his spirit always pulled him back to White Rock. About three weeks after his move, he started to feel very ill. Going to the emergency at Foothills Medical Centre, he was admitted and diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, and passed away 8 days later. He succumbed to the same illness his older brother passed away from in December 2020.

David was a fun loving man. He loved to travel, which took him to Hawaii 10 times. He enjoyed all visits back home with his parents, and many adventures with his brothers and sister.

David is survived by his brother Don (Sylvia) of Invermere, BC, sister Mary-Jane (Stan) of Calgary, sister-in-law Casey of Calgary; twelve nieces and nephews and their families. David was predeceased by his parents Walter and Ann, and his brother Jerry.

Eternal Memory! Until we meet again.
