Obituary of Werner Georg MATZEIT

February 25, 1937 - Girngallen-Matz, Lithuania
June 24, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

With deep sadness, on June 24, 2021, Werner Georg Matzeit passed away peacefully with his family at his side, at the age of 84 years.  Werner will be missed dearly by family and friends, especially by his beloved wife of 58 years, Adriana Matzeit (nee Van Leeuwen).

Werner was born on a farm in Girngallen-Matz, Lithuania, on February 25, 1937. During WWII, he fled with his family to Germany, as refugees until they got granted immigrant status. In 1957, Werner left his family to immigrate to Calgary, Canada, where he has resided for the remainder of his life.

In 1963, he married his true love, Adriana Van Leeuwen, and had two children, Marcus and Iris. Werner became a talented carpenter, where he would design, then build masterpiece houses from bottom to top.  He was athletic by nature, excelled at skiing, sailing, and still working on golf until his last day. Werner could play the piano by sound and had a gift for painting, filling walls in all his family's homes.  Over the years, Werner and Adriana travelled to many places throughout Asia, Europe, Russia and North America, with their favourite being Mexico.  Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family and cherished each moment he had with his beloved pet dogs. 

Besides his loving wife Adriana, Werner is survived by: his son Marcus (Marcella) Matzeit, daughter Iris (Mark) Kikkert, grandchildren, Carina, Alex, Myles, and Scott; sister, Hilde Jolitz still in Germany; as well as numerous extended family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Magda and Georg Matzeit, sister Brigitte Stocker and his pets, Niki, Lucy, Piki, Teddy and Carley.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel Of The Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Funeral Services to follow at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
