Obituary of Derek MILLER

October 12, 1927 – Newcastle Upon Tyne, England
June 29, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Derek Miller, beloved husband of Maureen Miller, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at the age of 93 years. 

Derek lived a full life and will be greatly missed by, Maureen, his wife of sixty-five years, his three children, Melanie, Forrest and John and their spouses, Kevin, Christine and Stacey. He will also be greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Lindsey, Jeff, Eila, Drake, Eden, Haley and the friends that he had over the years.  

Derek enjoyed singing in the Calgary Philharmonic Choir and the Calgary Music Makers senior’s choir.  He also liked wood working, birding, cross-county skiing, outdoor activities and Formula-1 car racing. He will be most remembered for his engaging smile and quick wit. 

Over the years Derek completed many projects, from finishing his basement to building a cabin from scratch. Through these projects he instilled a can-do attitude in his children that continues with them to this day, and they will always be grateful for that.  

Derek loved to travel and had visited England, Portugal, France, Italy and Egypt to name a few. He may have caught the travel bug during his posting in India while serving in the British military shortly after World War II.

Derek had an incredibly sharp mind and could recall obscure facts and figures at will. Anyone that challenged him to a game of Trivial Pursuit soon regretted it and regretted it badly.

During the last 7 months of his life Derek was being cared for by the staff at Glenmore Age Care. He and his family found the staff there to be caring, compassionate and always willing to do more than required. We will always be grateful for the effort they put in to make his life as good as it could be.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Monday, July 5, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.  Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Derek’s obituary here.
