Obituary of Stephen (Steve) Robert ZAWALYKUT

Steve Zawalykut, born in Calgary, AB, on June 14, 1939, passed away on Monday, June 28, 2021, at the age of 82 years. He was the beloved father of Ginny Ladell and Deb Gallant (Robert); loving grandfather to Kassandra (Chris), Austin (Mary Jane), Adam, and Garret; and great-grandfather to Caiden and Avalyn.

Steve is also survived by his brother Pat (Shirley), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and all of Steve’s family. 
He was predeceased by his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Jeanette, parents, Michael and Annie Zawalykut; sister-in-law Roseanne, brother Edward, and nephew Jeff. 

Steve graduated from St Mary's High School and attended both S.A.I.T. and Olds College, where he obtained a degree in horticulture. Steve worked for the City of Calgary Parks and Recreation for thirty-two years and was instrumental in the design of many of Calgary’s notable public gardens, including the Reader Rock Garden.

Later in life, he turned his love of horticulture to woodworking and won an award at the Calgary Stampede for one of his many creations. Steve enjoyed hockey, carpentry, gardening, giving unsolicited advice, storytelling to anyone who would listen, sharp fashion, and road trips.

A Public Celebration of Life will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery (Erlton Street, 1st Street & 32nd Avenue S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, July 05, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

The family extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who was instrumental in caring for Steve during his illness.
