Obituary of Barbara Adeline HAYNES

November 4, 1921 – Dendron, Saskatchewan October 3, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Barbara passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 3rd, one month shy of her 96th birthday, after a short time at South Health Campus in Calgary and is now in the loving arms of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Born in the farmhouse home of her parents, John and Barbara Schwartz, she was the ninth of the family’s 14 children (eight boys and six girls) and the last of all her siblings to survive. Growing up she was known as Adeline, the name she used until she was in her 40s at which time she discovered it was actually her middle name and so she chose to be called Barbara. After completing Grade 8 during the Great Depression, she left school to work as home help in neighbouring farms. It was during this time that she became a born-again Christian while attending a local church camp meeting, a decision that remained a focal part of her life right up to the time of her passing. In her late teens, she moved to Medicine Hat to continue working as home help and then as a waitress in a café where she first met her future husband Lowell Haynes. They were married on September 21, 1942, when she was 20 and he 23. They initially lived in the back of the little grocery and confectionery store run by Lowell’s parents in Medicine Hat’s Riverside area. The first of three daughters, Elaine, was born in 1943, followed by Mayvis in 1946 and Lorna in 1947. The family moved back and forth from Medicine Hat, first to Vancouver during World War II while Lowell was with the RCAF in Richmond, BC, then after more time in Medicine Hat they were a year in Tilley, Alberta, in the late 1940s before returning to Medicine Hat and eventually making the move to Calgary in 1967 as Canada was celebrating its 100th birthday. Once the children were in school, Barbara started working part-time and then fulltime as a retail clerk at Eatons in Medicine Hat in the notions and other departments and also in children’s wear in Calgary, positions she had for a total of more than 15 years between the mid-1950s and the early 1970s. In Medicine Hat, she and the family attended the Alliance Tabernacle church, so when they lived in various Southwest and Northeast parts of Calgary – Lincoln Park and Temple – their worship took place at First Alliance, then Rockyview Alliance, followed by Grace Baptist. Lowell passed away in 1989 and shortly afterwards Barbara took up residence in Calgary’s Rundle district, eventually relocated to an apartment in a seniors residence in the Millrise area in 2002 and went faithfully to the Pavilion of Hope Church nearby thanks to those who would drive her each week. Despite growing health problems, she remained as independent as she could in her own place until it was necessary to be admitted to South Health Campus in Calgary in mid-August of 2017 and where she remained for the last six weeks of her life. She was predeceased by her husband Lowell, daughter Lorna Senger, grandson Wes Keller and son-in-law Marvin Miller. Surviving her are: Daughter: Elaine (David) Croft of Calgary and Okotoks. Grandchildren: Miles (Tammy) Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Joni (Jay) Harder of Calgary. Great-grandchildren: Connor, Parker and Paige Miller, all of Knoxville, Tennessee; Justice, Lincoln, Maxwell and Branson Harder, all of Calgary. Daughter: Mayvis (Len) Corben of North Vancouver, BC.
