Obituary of Dymphna Sylvia SPENCE

April 4, 1935 – Dublin, Ireland

June 27, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Dymphna Spence (née Kinsella), affectionately nicknamed Dymps, beloved wife of David Spence, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021, at the age of 86 years.

Dymps was born in Dublin, Ireland on April 4, 1935. She met her husband David while on a trip to Scotland during the Edinburgh festival. They were married in Scotland on June 26, 1965. They immigrated to Canada by boat a few years later. Dymps and David settled in Alberta in Southwest Calgary in the neighbourhood of Canyon Meadows.

From her Irish roots, Dymps inherited the gift of the gab. She always had a story or two about growing up in Ireland. She also inherited the luck of the Irish as she loved playing the lotto and often won. Dymps had a very proper, polite, and refined demeanour. She was a classy lady and would never dream of leaving the house without “putting her face on,” which she liked to do while watching Coronation Street.

Dymps will be remembered for her gentle sweet soul, sense of humour, colourful fashion sense, and her sharp wit. She had also earned a reputation amongst her children’s friends for making the best cup of tea, grilled cheese sandwiches, mashed potatoes, and for having the best snacks. She dished these comfort foods up with a side of her always honest advice.

Dymps was a devoted mother to her two children and created many fond memories for her family. So many of these memories were made on annual family vacations to Fairmont Hot Springs and Penticton.

Dymps is survived by her son Rory, daughter Kirsty Oulovsky, son-in-law Joseph, granddaughter Maggie, and grandson David.

Dymps was predeceased by her beloved husband David, Great Dane Caesar, daughter Tara, parents, Irene and James Kinsella; and in-laws, Robert and Margaret Spence.
