Obituary of Polly ZIP

July 2, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Polly Zip on Friday, July 2, 2021, at the age of 94 in Calgary, AB.

Polly was born on February 19, 1927 in northern Alberta. She was raised on a farm near Ashmont, about which she would speak affectionately for the rest of her life. As the eldest of five siblings, she not surprisingly developed a strong work ethic and appreciation of learning. Polly earned her teaching certificate and started her career teaching in one room schoolhouses in northern Alberta.  During that time, she met her future husband Bohdan. They married in 1954 and moved to Calgary in the late 1950s. She continued to teach school in Calgary while earning her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta. Home Economics was her most treasured subject, where she was able to share her love for cooking and sewing. She later served on the Board of Governors at Mount Royal College.

Polly  was predeceased by her husband Bohdan Zip, to whom she was married for sixty-three years, and two of her brothers, Peter and Steve Misiewich. She is survived by her brother William Misiewich, her sister Mary Paterson, her son David (Theresa) Zip and her daughter Catherine (Michael) Ford. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Larissa, Erin, David, Christopher and Elizabeth. We would like to sincerely thank all of her wonderful caregivers both at Chinook Care Centre and at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor (404 Meredith Road N.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.

Requiem Services will be held at St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor (404 Meredith Road N.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery to follow. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
