Obituary of Mary Mildred WALSH

May 24, 1929 – Atholville, New Brunswick

July 5, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

On Monday, July 5, 2021 our Mom passed away in Calgary, AB, at the age of 92. She was peaceful and surrounded by the love of her family.

She grew up in Atholville and moved to Toronto at the age of twenty-one joining her sister Irene. The two were like Laverne and Shirley living together and working at General Electric. She lost her own mother at the tender age of eight years and overcame many obstacles to become a remarkable mother and grandmother. After her Moms death she went to live with her surrogate parents Mr. and Mrs. Soucy; remaining extremely close to her father and all her siblings seeing them often. Together they shaped who she was. Grandma Soucy became a treasured influence on our lives. Although motherhood was Mom’s first priority, she made her own opportunities to pursue her career including being Assistant Manager at D’Allairds and opening up her own consignment store Babish Fashions. In the summer of 1975, our family moved west to experience Canada and new opportunities eventually settling in Calgary. After retirement, Mom and Dad enjoyed many winters in Yuma, Arizona.

Dad was the love of her life and the two were inseparable to the end. Our Mom and Dad had nicknamed each other Sam and Rufus respectively. Where one went, the other was always close behind, talking and holding hands as if they were the only two people in a room. The closeness they shared their whole life was a bond most can only imagine.

Mom was full of mischief, a joke and sarcastic humour followed by a wink was her hallmark. She spent two summers with her beloved sister Theresa and her friend Flora hitchhiking to Old Orchard Beach at seventeen years old. Mom was also full of kindness and compassion. She was always interested in how her daughters and grandkids were doing, focusing on others rather than herself. We say the grandkids were hers and she allowed us daughters to raise them. Mom loved to knit and sew. She gave each of her grandkids teddy bears with sweaters she knit and overalls she sewed. Mom had incredible fashion sense wearing stylish outfits and hats. Her sense of humour was exceptional and she was always joking with her companion Daisy and the caregivers at Staywell Manor. We will miss that smile!

Mom leaves behind her daughters, Brenda Meneghetti (Mauro), Mary Meenagh (Kelly) and Patricia Walsh (Craig Bot); and her sister Theresa Regan Parent, who was her closest friend. She will be remembered by her ten cherished grandchildren, Michael (Brendon), Marcus, Morgan, Joni, Patrick, Maya, John, Connor, Marie and Carter and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband William Patrick Walsh, her mother Mary Regan (Butler), her father Michael Regan and eight brothers and sisters and a brother and sister from her Soucy family.

Relatives and friends are invited to Visitation and Prayers at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
