Obituary of Donald Ray STORY

February 10, 1939 – Windsor, Ontario
July 17, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Don Story of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the age of 82 years.

Don was the beloved husband of Sheila Story (nee Beaton); loving father of Craig (and his wife Lauri) and Lianne (and her husband Carey); and cherished grandfather of Kyle, Taylor and Alyssa.  Don was the son of Harold and Audrey (both deceased), and younger brother to Ken (deceased) and Phyllis.  He is also survived by cousins, seven nieces and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews and their families and other relatives.

Don was born in Windsor, ON, on February 10, 1939.  He graduated from Walkerville Collegiate high school in Walkerville (Windsor), ON and then from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors Economics) in 1961.

Don worked for decades in economics, money market trading and other financial services specialties in Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary, including the majority of his career with the TD Bank (both in Toronto and in Calgary on their treasury bill / money market desks).  After decades in those fields, Don still closely followed the markets and economic news after his retirement and right up until his passing.

Notwithstanding (or maybe because of) the flower stickers placed on the door of his Ford Galaxie, Don married Sheila, the love of his life, in 1969, and together they followed the early careers of many a musician in Toronto.  They were married for almost 52 years, and together provided the foundation and launching pad for their family.

Don had a dry sense of humour, which he shared with his family, his friends, and the unsuspecting nurses, doctors and home care workers that came into his life.  Don gave up curling and his own physical pursuits to enjoy watching the soccer games of his son and his daughter, and then subsequently those of his grandchildren.  Don was a Stamps fan and season ticket holder for years, enjoying games with his son, and then later with his son and grandson.  In more recent years, Don also looked forward to nights of wings with his daughter.

A private family service will be held. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Don’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Vasculitis Foundation Canada, www.vasculitis.ca.

In living memory of Don, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
