Marie CODLING (nee Salmonson)

Obituary of Marie Mildred CODLING (nee Salmonson)

In Loving Memory of Marie Codling

Marie Mildred Codling (nee Salmonson) passed away peacefully on July 19, 2021, at the age of 93 years. At the time of her death, Marie was a resident of Bethany Calgary. Her passing is noted by the Bethany staff, who grieve for someone they knew well for several years.

Born in rural Nova Scotia near Halifax on March 10, 1928, to Gustave and Mildred Salmonson. At the age of 17, she married her love, Willam (Bill) Codling. This was 1945. Together they lived a post-war military lifestyle while raising a young family. Every two years the military had them pack and move everything. Together they lived in Germany for two years, Rivers Manitoba, Halifax and several others, finally ending in Calgary.

Marie is survived by her three children (spouse): Wayne (Paulette) of Victoria, BC, Sharon Teertstra (the late Jack Teertstra) of Pickering, Ontario and William Codling of Edmonton, Alberta. Her Grandchildren: Jamie Wilson of Brampton, Ontario, Jason Codling (Mandy) of Edmonton, Alberta, Jennifer Garcia (Alan) of Pickering, Ontario, and Stephanie Codling of Edmonton, Alberta. Her Great-Grandchildren, Olivia and Ty Garcia of Pickering, Ontario, Kaitlyn Giles of Gibbons, Alberta, Hailey Rawson (Randy) of Gibbons, Alberta and her Great-Great-grandchild Elizabeth Rawson of Gibbons, Alberta.

Marie is also survived by her sister Ruth Meaders of Austin, Texas and her niece Kristen Meaders.

She was a woman of courage. She will certainly be remembered as a model of toughness and determination. She believed deeply in self-determination and was able to live in gentle poverty on her own because she took jobs that others refused. More than once, she faced down rowdy youths in early morning hours while working a shift at a convenience store. She was alone a lot but was rarely lonely. These qualities helped her through difficulties and continue to inspire those who knew and love her.

Marie will be fondly remembered by her family as Mom, Grandma, Gram-mama, and Grams. She was loving, loyal and kind to everyone lucky enough to meet her. She took pleasure in cooking and baking for others. She loved history, especially early Canadian. She also took a slightly self-conscious pleasure in ghost stories and juicy gossip. Her passion for baking, cooking, history, and enjoying ‘gossip mags’ has trickled down the generations.
