Mavis MAGOR

Obituary of Mavis MAGOR

November 9, 1920 – August 3, 2021

Winifred Mavis Magor of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

Mavis Magor lived for 100 years, and in each one she sought adventure. Born in the hamlet of Vogue, just outside St. Day in Cornwall, England, Mavis was the eldest of Sidney and Winifred’s four children. Mavis could not be contained by the tiny village where her journey began. As a young person she worked as a nanny and a farmer as far away as Scotland. When WWII broke out, she enlisted in the British Royal Air Force and trained as a cook. Watching, whenever she had a free moment, as the squadrons of RAF Bomber Command took off for mainland Europe, Mavis used her skill with local farm produce and her talent for never letting anything go to waste, to make sure the boys who returned had the strength and nutrition they needed. She was described by her commanding officer as reliable, diligent, contentious, and an excellent cook. Mavis retained her passion for food throughout her life, never satisfied with a substandard meal, and always delighting in a story of a delicious feast lovingly prepared. After the war, Mavis wanted a whole new adventure, and boarded a ship for Canada where she would spend the rest of her life. She never tired of travel, visiting Canada’s North all by herself in the 1960s, because, in her words, she “just wanted to.” She adored books and read avidly for decades, experiencing new adventures with her imagination when she could not experience them in real life. She was a brilliant conversationalist, endlessly entertaining, witty, tough, uproariously funny, and irrepressible to the last.

Mavis passed peacefully on to her next adventure at her retirement community in Calgary, where she left an indelible impression on dozens of residents and staff who will miss her and remember her fondly.

She is survived in the UK by her nieces, Christine, Julie, Anita, Margaret, and Jeanette; her cousins, Jennifer, Sonia, Tania, Sarah, and Robin; and in Canada by her legion of dear friends such as Jill, Karen, Steven, Margaret, Roma, Shaun, Nathan, and Laura.

Mavis’ life will be celebrated in a Public Service at Chartwell Colonel Belcher on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at 2:00 p.m.
