Obituary of Lorraine Elaine YOUNG (nee Anhorn)

Lorraine Young of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the age of 84 years.  Lorraine was born in Medicine Hat, AB, on November 1, 1936 to parents John and Tillie Anhorn (nee Hoffman). She had two older siblings, sister Helen and brother Don, and younger sister Stella. Lorraine grew up in Hilda, AB, helping out with work on the family farm and later, working at her parents’ café. Lorraine graduated from Alexandra Composite High School in 1955. Lorraine married James Thomas (Tom) Young on November 9, 1957 in Medicine Hat, AB. Shortly after that, she and Tom moved to Calgary where Lorraine worked as an administrative assistant with Caldraft Engineering.

Lorraine devoted her life to caring for her family and home and accomplished much through her life. She was particularly proud of raising her two sons, Mike and Dean and her grandchildren, Hannah, Charlotte, and Brodie. In addition to being a tireless and devoted homemaker, wife   and mother, she also performed bookkeeping and filing duties for two family businesses. 

Lorraine enjoyed golfing and skiing with her family, bowling with friends, and gardening. She was a member of the Earl Grey Golf Club in Calgary for 35 years. Lorraine and Tom loved to travel. Some of their most memorable vacations were spent in Spain, Portugal, Europe, Hawaii, California and Mexico. They also enjoyed spending time in the mountains of Alberta and British Columbia and vacationed regularly in Fairmont Hot Springs, BC.  

She will be most remembered for her warmth, kindness, generosity of time, infectious laugh, and loving spirit.  Lorraine is survived by her two sons, Mike (Tina) Young of Calgary, AB, and Dean Young (Jennifer Fowler) of Toronto, ON. Lorraine is also survived by her sister Stella Gray, sisters-in-law Flora (Flo) Anhorn and Catherine Young-Lanctot, and brothers-in-law George Gray and Gordon Lanctot, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, John and Tillie; sister Helen Stearns; brother Don Anhorn; and husband Tom. 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers at Covenant Care, St. Teresa Place, 3rd Floor west wing in Calgary.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed here.
