Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Sykes (nee James)

August 10, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Mary Sykes of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at the age of 93 years.

Mary was born in Whitbourne, Herefordshire, England on July 6, 1928. Mary earned her degree as a Registered Nurse at Worchester Royal Infirmary. Mary married Dr. George W. Sykes in 1955. She accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her postgraduate Degree in Midwifery. Reading mystery novels was her passion, along with bridge, travel, shopping, and gardening. Her most memorable vacations were her many trips to France with her husband George. Mary will be most remembered for being strong-willed and willing to share her opinion on almost any subject! She was always very accepting of new ideas and people. 

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Sykes and Nathalie Pichette, her daughter Elizbeth Eckert of Newton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Edward (Brittany) Eckert of Newton, Iowa, Robert Eckert of Ottumwa, Iowa, George Sykes of Toronto, ON, and Quinn Sykes of Calgary, AB; and three great-grandchildren, Lucy, David  and Evelyn Eckert; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Dr. George Sykes, her parents, Annie and Robert; and her two brothers, Dennis and Leslie.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may also be shared and viewed here. The Family would like to thank Wentworth Manor for the loving care they provided to Mary during her time there.
