August 17, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Donald John Currie, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the age of 61 years.

Donald John Currie was born on a blustery November morning in Calgary, AB, the 3rd child of C.W. Parker Currie and Jean (née Sutherland) Currie. He was a very sweet, serious boy who loved to play games and had a terrific imagination. Don loved to read and write and was the proud captain of the Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School debating team. There was nothing he loved better than to have a good debate with anyone and everyone! Graduating high school with a top honors scholarship, he completed most of an Honors English degree at the University of Calgary before becoming the VP for The Irish Rovers Freehouse Corporation. He managed The Unicorn and The Rose and Crown restaurants across the country as well as the food services for the 1986 Expo in Vancouver, BC and 1992 Expo in Columbus, Ohio. With partners, Don proudly opened Friars Pub, serving up many a pint to thirsty Calgary customers.

Don’s greatest joys in life were his children, grandchildren, music, reading, crossword puzzles, and sports. He loved listening and commenting on CKUA radio (@babackua), and was a faithful follower of his favorite teams, the Boston Bruins and L.A. Raiders. An avid sports fan his entire life, he loved playing hockey and golf, and hanging out with his long time friends of the Broken Shania Gang.

Don will be sadly missed and remembered by his wife Nicky (née Christian) Currie of Calgary, Daughters, Ashley (John)Van Lanen of Ontario, and Eden (Dave) Currie of Calgary, AB; Grandchildren, Cole and Levi Van Lanen; Mother Jean Evelyn Currie, Siblings, Marianne (Gary) Agnew/Whitehouse, David (Sandy) Currie and Lynn Stokes. He is also lovingly remembered by his family in England, Patricia Christian, and Lesley & Richard Fairburn. Don leaves behind his extended family and many faithful friends.

The family asks that you lift a pint for him, and in lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to CKUA.com or a song requested in Don’s memory. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
