Obituary of Shirley Isabella Davidson

September 28, 1926 – Hamilton, Ontario
August 21, 2021– Calgary, Alberta

On August 21, just shy of her 95th birthday, our beloved Mom and Grandma, Shirley Isabella Davidson got her angel wings. While we are deeply saddened by her passing, we celebrate her long and beautiful life. Shirley is survived by her children, Mary Baker (Mark Ruthenberg), Ann, Charlie (Shauna), and May (Curtis Kramer), and her grandchildren, Devin, Kendra, Cole, Dylan, Mikayla, Athena, Bella, Connor, and Charleigh. She was predeceased by her husband Bruce and son-in-law Brad Baker. Shirley was born in Hamilton, ON, and raised on a farm just outside Binbrook. She attended McMaster University and graduated with her BA in 1947. She then began her first career in retail in the HR department of Zeller's. While working in the London, Ontario store, she met Bruce. They were married in 1954. After the birth of her first child, Shirley embarked on her second career as a home maker, raising four challenging children. Bruce stayed with Zeller's, and as was the custom in those days, was transferred to many different cities across Canada. Our family moved so many times that Mom declared, when we moved to Calgary in 1971, she had moved 19 times in 17 years and wasn't doing it again. Calgary became home. When her youngest child entered school, Mom embarked on her third career, this time in retail sales. She worked for many years at Eaton's, managing several different departments over the years. As soon as Mom and Dad both retired, they began travelling. They had many wonderful adventures travelling the world together. Mom was also active in various volunteer roles within St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church where she was a long-standing member. Mom was a force of nature. She was intelligent, strong, courageous, and passionate, but the best word to describe her is fierce. She loved her children and grandchildren beyond measure. She had high expectations for everyone, including herself. She inspired, supported, and encouraged everyone she touched to have the confidence to be the very best they could be. She was everyone's most ardent advocate. No one had your back like Mom. Her energy and enthusiasm for every aspect of life were contagious. She relished all of life’s adventures and boldly faced its challenges. She never backed down. Fierce. Hers was a life lived to the very fullest. Mom, we will miss you so very much, but we celebrate your amazing life and the incredible woman you were. Thank you for being our Mom and Grandma. Love you forever.
