Obituary of Elaine Annette Hegland (nee Hornung)

July 25, 1946 – Davidson, Saskatchewan
August 26, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Elaine passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at the age of 75 years after a two year battle with cancer. Despite her reluctance to take it on, she fought hard and showed us all her true strength right to the very end.

Elaine was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan, on July 25, 1946, the eldest child of Rachel and Arthur Hornung. She spent her youth in small town Saskatchewan before settling in Calgary to raise her boys. 

Elaine’s career was spent in the Calgary Catholic school system as a secretary where she made numerous life-long friends and touched countless children’s lives. Elaine was passionate about her daily walks and they proved to fortify her strength during her battle. She loved her gardens, flowers and the beauty of nature in general. Elaine loved her grandchildren deeply and especially loved her Fridays with Davis.   

Elaine is survived by her loving partner of 30 years, Tom Ball, her sons, Jeffrey (Lesa), and Danny (Michelle); grandchildren, Ryan (Sloane), Hayley, and Davis; Tom’s sons Craig, Gary (Janet) and Mike (Sara); and their children, Roan, Rionach, Jaxen, and Joey. Elaine is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Norm (Wendy), Doris (Joe), Ken (Karen), Madeleine (Gary), Joan (George), Richard (Gwen); and brother-in-law Patrick Keck; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Elaine was predeceased by her son Keith Hegland and her sister Louise Keck.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.  Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Ms. Hegland’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Reception to follow in the church hall. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

The family would like to thank the staff at Foothills IPCU Unit 47 for their end of life care and especially to Dr. Scott Dowden and his staff at The Tom Baker Cancer Center for the amazing support and treatment they provided over the last two years. Dr. Dowden was instrumental in giving us two more quality years with Elaine.

In living memory of Elaine Hegland, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
