October 11, 1958 - Corner Brook, Newfoundland
September 1, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta
Daniel Maher, much loved husband of Betty Maher (nee Yetman), of Harbour Grace, NF, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the age of 62 years.
DJ was born in Corner Brook, NF, on October 11, 1958. He was a member of the faculty of the University of Calgary for many years. He studied at Memorial University, Laval, Dakar (Senegal) and obtained his PhD at Queen’s University. He was a member of SATOR (an international French literature scholars’ group). He proudly volunteered for the Patients and Family Advisory Council for the new Calgary Cancer Centre. DJ enjoyed reading, traveling, sports, good wine and good food, especially when shared with friends and family.
DJ will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Betty, his sons, Joseph, and Michael Maher; sisters, Peggy (Michele) of Victoria, BC, Susan of Halifax, NS, and JoAnne (Ron) of Halifax, NS; as well as numerous extended family and friends. He was the son of William Maher and Anastasia O’Reilly.
Due to Covid, a Private Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join DJ’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. We encourage you to pour yourself a beverage. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
Thank you to the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, especially Dr. Peter Duggan, and our family physician, Dr. Steven Burt.
As someone who believed in the value of educational travel, in lieu of flowers, DJ requested donations to the Dr. Rowland Smith Memorial Scholarship for ASHA or the E. Catherine Barclay Scholarship for study in France.
