Obituary of Barbara (Barb) KANANEN (nee Wobick)
September 29, 1935 – Carmangay, Alberta
September 2, 2021 – Okotoks, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a very special lady, Barb Kananen, on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at the age of 85 years. Barb was loved by many, especially her beloved husband, Frank Kananen of Okotoks, AB.
Barb was a kind, caring, loyal, loving, intelligent and selfless person, who thought of others constantly. She was a wonderful listener and conversationalist. Barb was born in Carmangay, AB, on September 29, 1935, to parents, Thelma and Godfrey Wobick. Barb spent her childhood in Barons, AB, where she met her very special and lifelong friends, Joan and George and her husband Frank. Barb and Frank were married on March 31, 1956, and were loyal sweethearts all these years, their love for each other steadfast. Barb and Frank moved to Pincher Creek, AB from Calgary after Frank retired, where Barb volunteered her time to Friends of The Library at the Pincher Creek Library for many years and very much enjoyed her time in doing so. As well as their residence in Pincher Creek, Barb and Frank had recreational property in the Gladstone Valley, which they enjoyed for many years. They welcomed family and friends to enjoy camping and the beauty of nature. Many of their nights were spent together around the campfire and an adult beverage or two may have been enjoyed as well; such good times and fond memories for families and friends.
Barb's life passion was reading books. She averaged reading about 40 books a year and her dream was to write a published novel. And that, she did, Barb created a beautiful fantasy story entitled, “Fairies in My Garden”. Her dream realized when her work was published in 2007; with the encouragement of her husband Frank and her dear friend Heather; and we were all very proud of her.
Besides her loving husband Frank Kananen, Barb is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sally Kananen; three grandchildren, Tim, Dan, and Alecia; and great-grandchild Olivia. She is also survived by her sister Phyllis. Barb was a very special auntie to many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She will be missed by all who knew her. Barb was predeceased by her parents, Thelma and Godfrey Wobick; and her daughter Tara Hyatt.
A Funeral Service will not be held at this time. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
We want to extend a special thank you to Barb’s physician, Dr. Steed, who provided such wonderful care to Barb as she battled Alzheimer's disease and the support that he provided to the family. As well, the wonderful care team at Tudor Manor in Okotoks. We are so grateful for the extreme love and care and respect that they provided to Barb. We are eternally grateful.
In living memory of Barb Kananen, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
