Obituary of Doris Derbyshire Nora Garner

Doris Garner beloved wife of James "Jim" Garner of Calgary, AB, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at the age of 93 years.

 

Doris had a satisfying career in nursing education and administration. In Calgary, she had a major role in the initiation of the nursing department of the new Rockyview Hospital in 1965. From 1968 to 1978, she was director of the Holy Cross School of Nursing. When the school closed, Doris obtained a Ph.D. in education at the University of Calgary after which she consulted in nursing curriculum and program evaluation in Calgary and Edmonton.

 

Earlier in her career, she taught nursing sciences in Edmonton and Medicine Hat, and was associate director of the Medicine Hat Hospital School of Nursing. She was active with the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses. She was a member of the Alberta Task Force on Nursing Education, the Board of Inquiry of the High River Hospital, the Universities Coordinating Council Committee on Nursing Education, and the Canadian Nurses Association Testing Service. Doris was a member of the Earl Grey Golf Club. She enjoyed hiking in her beloved mountains and treasured time spent with her family and friends. In later years, she was active at the Westside Recreation Centre and Manor Village at Fish Creek Park.  Doris enjoyed good health and kept busy to her last day with a variety of hobbies, activities and interests.

 

Doris is survived by her best friend and loving husband Jim, her dear son Peter Stevenson (Helena Chavarria), and her grandchildren Nicholas, Natalie and Diego Stevenson and Emilio Hernandez. Doris was predeceased by parents, Mrs. Nora and Dr. Peter Melling.

 

Due to current covid conditions, the funeral service for Doris will be a Private Family Service. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Garner's service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
