Obituary of Doreen (Macy) May Jacobs-Turning Robe
December 8, 1953 – Tsuut'ina Nation, Alberta
September 15, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta
Our beautiful mother, Doreen (Macy) May Jacobs–Turning Robe was vibrant, courageous, loving, and above all, humble. She was called home on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, joining our grandparents: Elsie Jacobs and her adopted father, Albert Boucher and our aunties and uncles.
She was born on Tsuut’ina Nation in the home of her grandparents, Winnie and Alex Bull. Our mother lived for her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and advocated for our Indigenous community and the wide circle of friendships that her life brought her. She was also a ‘Friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob’, where she continued to ‘12 step’ her AA family until her passing. Our mother was employed as a Nurse’s Aide at Bowcrest Nursing Home for twenty years, and shortly after went back to school to become a Community Outreach Worker. It was then she began her career with AwoTaan Healing Lodge Society (AHLS ) as a Family and Child Support Worker and then in Outreach as a Grandmother Turtle Facilitator. We are told our mother was a strong voice and advocate for pedestrian lights on MacLeod Trail for all the moms and children staying in AHLS Emergency Shelter to cross safely. She also lobbied for a mobile Dental Bus to visit the shelter so the children could receive dental care. Our mother also established AHLS connections with Tsuu’tina Nation and other Urban Indigenous communities to share the teachings of Triple P Parenting, Healthy Babies and Grandmother Turtle and the Elders Corner. Mom was also an advocate of physical health and started the Family Walk and Music and Movement Program for the families staying at the AHLS Emergency Shelter. She would continue those teachings with our Indigenous community until she passed. Mom characteristically and steadfastly refused to be defined by her illness or any of the challenges life sent her way. We are proud of our mother and will miss her in ways too numerous to count and in ways, we do not yet realize. All of us who knew her will continue to be inspired by her life and our individual parts in it.
Our mother is survived by our father, Randy Turning Robe Sr. and our family, Shannon and Darcy Genest, Stacey Eagletail, Hayley Turning Robe and Shawn (Ira) Weasel Moccasin, and Randy (Dory) Turning Robe Jr., and her beautiful grandchildren, Matthew, Tyson, Kaitlyn and Katie. She is also survived by our aunties and uncles: Ethel Jacobs, Willard Cardinal, Karen Dodging Horse, Marie (Pixie) and Marvin Dodging Horse, Sheila Jacobs, Stella Turning Robe, Wayne and Verona Fox, and Franklin and Trina Turning Robe; as well as our Siksika, Tsuu’tina, Kainai and Maskqacis cousins. Our family wishes to include her many lifelong friends. Heartfelt thanks to Tom Baker Cancer Centre and especially Dr. Mary Ellen Sturgeon and her staff.
Wake Services will be held at Bullhead Hall, Tsuut’ina Nation, AB, on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at Bullhead Hall on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Tsuut’ina Cemetery (Tsuut’ina Nation, AB). Traditional Feast will be held at the Bullhead Community Hall (Tsuut’ina Nation, AB) immediately following the graveside.
