Obituary of John Shykula
August 27, 1927 - September 23, 2021
John Shykula of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the age of 94 years.
John worked nine years with the Royal Canadian Air Force, all over the country which he enjoyed very much. He spent six years in the Arctic, including three years on the Distant Early Warning Line. John also worked at The City of Calgary for a time. He then started his own business, successfully building it until his retirement. John was very interested and involved in aviation, he even built his own airplane. He enjoyed flying for recreation his whole life. John was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Canadian Owners and Pilots Association, Calgary Flying Club, and many others. Alongside his wife Elsie, John was a member of the Springbank Heritage Club and the Hi-Land Swingers Square Dancers. They were long-time members of St. Stephen Church. Together John and Elsie enjoyed traveling, with favourite destinations being Arizona, Hawaii, and Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They also enjoyed many cruises.
John will be dearly missed by his daughter Christine, son David, six grandchildren, Kelly, Kyle, Johnathan, Thomas, Isabella, and Carmen; two brothers, Steve, and Mike; three sisters, Kay, Jenny, and Pat, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.
John was predeceased by his loving wife Elsie, daughter Kathy, parents, John, and Mary; and two sisters, Ann, and Nancy.
Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church (4903 – 45th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, October 1, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Cemetery.
