Esther was born in Spain in the province of Valencia, on September 27, 1960 to her mother and father, Amparo and Julio Fuertes.

The family emigrated from Spain to Canada in March of 1966. Esther’s parents were looking for a better life for their family, and with Esther’s maternal aunt and uncle already living in Calgary, Alberta, it seemed like an ideal situation. While her parents originally thought of returning to Spain after a few years, those thoughts quickly passed as they saw the possibilities for their young family in Canada, and Calgary in particular.

Esther graduated from James Fowler High School in 1978 and began her working career at the Alberta Wheat Board. Eventually, Esther was hired on by the City of Calgary and she worked in various departments for over 25 years, including the Calgary Police Service and Calgary Housing Authority, from which she took a disability retirement in 2015 due to health reasons. Esther’s health continued to decline, but her outlook on life was as rosy as always. She was quick witted and had a cheery disposition for her family and her nieces, Amanda Bulk, Laurel Fuertes and Linnea Fuertes; as well as her nephews, Carlos Bulk and Lucas Fuertes.

Esther died on September 30, 2021 at the age of 61, after battling her illness. She requested a quiet family remembrance on the shore of Lake Louise. The family will gather there once arrangements can be made. She is survived by her elder sister Sonia Bulk (Hank Bulk) and younger brother, Cesar Fuertes (Gina Fryer).

The family wishes to thank the staff at Intercare Chinook, where Esther spent her last days. They were very caring and managed Esther’s care professionally and with compassion.
