HUMPHREY, Phyllis “Elaine” (nee Cadman)

September 8, 1931 - Edmonton, Alberta

October 7, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Phyllis Elaine Humphrey of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at the age of 90 years.

Elaine was born in Edmonton, AB, on September 8, 1931, to Urban and Dorothy Cadman, and lived in Calgary, AB, her entire life. Elaine had five siblings: Ken, Stanley (deceased), Donald, David and Patricia. Elaine attended Garbutt Business College where she met her husband-to-be, George Humphrey, in 1948. Elaine and George were married in 1949 and spent 66 years together until he passed away in 2014. They had three children: Debbie Muir, Fred Humphrey (Janet), and Vicky Humphrey (deceased). She was a proud grandmother of five grandchildren: Amy Harvey (Morgen), Cayley Muir (Roel), Andrew Muir (Megan), Ryan Humphrey (Madi) and Lily Humphrey. She was also delighted to have a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Harvey.

Elaine learned to swim as a young girl swimming in the Elbow River near her childhood home, and while her children were growing up, she shared her love of the water with others as a swimming instructor at the YWCA. Elaine had many interesting pursuits in her career such as an ophthalmologist’s assistant and land administrator in the oil and gas sector. She eventually opened her own company and was an early adopter of software use in that sector. She was self-taught and had a passion for learning new things. A social butterfly, Elaine loved organizing family gatherings and demonstrated her creative talents writing poetry and creating customized photo albums for her relatives. She is remembered for her kind heart, generosity and outgoing personality, and was always up for a laugh. Bringing people together was a passion of hers and as a talented seamstress, many of her creations were featured by friends and family at gatherings she was always happily hosting.
