Obituary of Dean Allan Somers

January 10, 1961 - October 6, 2021

Dean Somers of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at the age of 60 years.

Dean was born in Calgary, AB, on January 10, 1961, to parents, Ken and Wyonne Somers. Dean graduated from Lord Beaverbrook High School. He started off working in the XL beef factory and t-shirt business while attending The Southern Institute of Technology (SAIT), obtaining his degree in Mechanical and Power Engineering. He then moved on to work at the School Board, where he received his Boiler Certificates and valued experience that led him to run his own company. Dean started his own business in 1988, Decade 90 Facility Management LTD. The business grew and expanded into new avenues, such as importing furniture.

Dean enjoyed playing baseball, fastball, and hockey when he was younger. So much so, that he coached the girl elite fastball team. Dean loved staying active and spending time outdoors, this perfect combination was given to him through his passion for golf. Although, no matter the sport, playing them himself, coaching others, or watching MLB and UFC, Dean loved to engage in any way he could.

Dean accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of becoming a father to his two girls, Leah, and Samantha. He loved spending as much time as he could with his girls, and telling everyone he knew, how proud of each he was. Dean was also very proud of starting his own successful business that provided for his family, his passion for detail and strong work ethic will forever be known within his network. Through his success, Dean was able to share the reward of hard work with his family, especially through his fondness for material things, like having a nice home and cars. However, his greatest passions were, coaching his eldest daughter Leah, through the National and Olympic level tryouts, for Team Canada; and taking his youngest daughter Samantha horseback riding to learn the equestrian style. Dean’s most memorable vacation was when he was able to take his then-wife Debbie, the girls, and his parents-in-law, to Disneyland for an official vacation that created very special memories for the family. While Dean had been working tirelessly to get his company up and running, this vacation signified the start of his success.

Dean will be remembered most for his flowing locks of golden hair (sorry Dad but it’s true!), and his days spent out on the ballfield.

Dean is survived by his best friend and former wife Debbie Somers, two daughters and son-in-law, Leah and Sean Lavers, and Samantha Somers; two grandchildren, Brooke Lavers, and Sawyer Lavers; and treasured pets, Shylo, and Casper. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Terry Somers-Barnes and Cliff Barnes; brother Barry Somers, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Dean was predeceased by his parents, Clarice “Wyonne” and Kenneth Somers.

“Dad, you were always so able, so fast and so strong.
In your little girl's eyes, you could do no wrong.
You would always listen, you never pried.
You were the arms around us when we cried.
I hope you can hear me so I can let you know.
That you were and will forever, be my superhero.
So yes, today I am full of sorrow,
but I will smile a little more with each tomorrow.
So please, Dad, go be at rest and know to me,
You were always the best.”
