Condolences
Stampede will be a little less Stampede-ish without our friend Matt. His heart of gold will be missed greatly… and he will be “toasted - to” often. Joanne and family, my deepest condolences.
So sorry to hear of your loss Matt always made me feel included. What a beautiful tribute to him that you all put together. Another good one gone too soon.
Love you all Kathy Roach
Our hearts are broken over the loss of Matthew. He was such a joy to spend time with. Our love and prayers go out to all the immediate family especially to Joanne. Stampede parades will be a little less lively without him, but we will carry on in his memory. Matthew always made time to catch up with you no matter how long it had been since the last visit. His zest for life will dearly be missed.
Thanks to the Roach family for allowing us to share Matt’s service. Our hearts are broken to hear of Matt’s passing. Joanne, we can only imagine how you are feeling. Matt came roaring into my life in front of Eatons when Mary talked me into watching the square dancing. The Roach boys soon talked me into joining the committee. We have been friends for so many years. Matt was an incredible man. Friendly, fun loving, compassionate and always respectful. Mike and I have so many fond memories of the times we spent with Matt. To set the record straight; Matt Roach was the best dancer to ever serve on the square dance committee. We will miss Matt every time we see a tall man in a hat and boots. Rest In Peace Matthew. Robyn and Mike Bagby.
Matt’s passing will leave a big hole in the ever growing Roach family. May he rest in peace and live on through your memories. Blessings to you all.
Joanne, John and extended family: My thoughts and prayers are with you today. What a wonderful live streamed service - low key just like Matthew wanted. It gave me a chance to reflect on the good times we had over the years - lunches and special dinners he organized at the DCC, events at Buzzards and having him hang with us at DTA's Hospitality Room in the #1 Legion. Even knowing his frailties, Matt lived his life on his own terms and we all benefited by having him in our lives. I can imagine him today two-stepping or drinking a 40 Creek, diet Pepsi no ice. Miss you my friend

Thank you for sharing your special memories during the service today. It was so loaded with love...I do look forward to when we can be together to celebrate Matt. He left his mark in so many ways, and I will always think of him and smile. He had a way of making us all feel special, and your words and pictures truly captured that today. Much love and big hugs to all XO
Joanne and all of the Roach clan, you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Matt was one of a kind, he always made me laugh, and sometimes cry. I am thankful for all the wonderful memories I have of him, Stampede, Great Dames dinner and football games. Take care of each other and remember the good times.
So sorry to hear of Matt’s passing. I have many wonderful memories of him from our years on Caravan - his smiles and hugs were always a big part of seeing him. Our condolences to Joanne, John and all his family. He will be missed. Joan, Hans and Johanna Kollewyn.
Thoughts and prayers with you and your family during this difficult time.
"I'm so sorry", or "I am sorry for your loss", doesn't really cover Matt's passing. HIs passing is a loss to us all.
Matt had become an institution for Stampede. His was that corner at 8th Street and 6th Avenue (thereabouts, as he did seem to wander a bit). Ladies from Australia asked me "where's that good looking blok that's normally here?" Apparently, I was not a satisfactory stand in.
Matt could easily be described as the glue that held parts of DTA and Square Dance together, although he did once tell me that it was really Horse S*#+, not glue.
For the 35+ years that Matt made me feel welcome, his was the handshake that never lost it's firmness.
His will be a voice and a smile that I will listen and look for - and miss.
Thank you for all of the memories, Matt.

Condolences to Joanne, John and the whole Roach family. It will be really strange walking into the Blue Room and not seeing that familiar face. Being able to sit down with Matt and getting caught up on what is happening in the Stampede world. All of your stories will truly be missed.

So sad Joanne for your loss. Matt was the most fun one can with another human being (that's the polite version) my regret is I didn't meet you both sooner. Bless you,

John and the rest of the Roach Family ...
So sorry to hear of Matt's passing. Much too young and yet he crammed so much into those 64 years.
My memory of Matt stems from our shared time on the Caravan Committee. What stands out most is his enthusiasm, joy of life, and desire to have everyone included in what ever he was up to!!! He made you feel welcome as if he had know you forever even when first met! He will be missed ... Happy Trails Matt ...

We all remember many happy times together with Matt at our Stampede Caravan breakfasts over the years. His beautiful smiles, Caravan hugs and that incredible whistle he could do to get everyone’s attention are just a few of the fond memories we carry with us.
Happy Trails Matt, until we meet again.
I've known Matt for decades through his contributions as a Downtown Attractions volunteer. He was an all around nice guy.
This is such sad news. My heart goes out to Joanne and the big family he loved so much. He was a true friend and one I will never forget.
