Obituary of Paul Francis McGrath

October 26, 1960 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
October 20, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Paul Francis McGrath beloved husband of Tania Karen Denton, passed away on Wednesday, 20th October, 2021 at the age of 60 years.

Paul was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 26th October, 1960. He moved to Calgary in 2006 where he began working at the Calgary Correctional Centre, a job he took great pride in.

Paul married Tania in Scotland in 2017, where he was detained by Customs and Immigration for the love of his soon-to-be wife. When he met Tania, not only did he fall in love with both her and her family, but also Scotland and the northeast of England which became his third home. 

He was a dedicated and passionate member of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community, training at the JR Academy in Calgary.  There he began his journey in 2008 eventually earning his black belt in 2018. Paul's love and commitment to the sport, and to his JR family, was a significant part of who he was. 

Paul was a friend to all and loved by many across the country.  Known as ‘Tug’ to his East Coast friends and Sammy/Wanderlei to those in Calgary, he exhibited an irresistible personality filled with love, compassion, humour, humility, and generosity.  He was totally selfless and a beacon of strength to many.  

Besides his loving wife Tania, Paul is survived by his father Frank, his brother David (Gail), niece Shaye and nephew Connor; sister Patricia (Kirby), niece Laura and nephew Andrew; and honorary sister Paulette. Paul was predeceased by his mother Mary.

A Celebration of Life will be held on 10th November 2021 at Bowness Legion (138 Bowness Center NW, Calgary, AB) beginning at 5:00 p.m.  This will be an informal opportunity for those who loved him to come and honour his memory by sharing stories and memories of the man they knew.
