Obituary of Jean Johnson

February 12, 1939 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

October 27, 2021 - Airdrie, Alberta

Jeannette “Jean” Johnson (nee Sherba), beloved wife of Wilbur Johnson, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at the age of 82 years.

Jean was born in Winnipeg, MB, on February 12, 1939, to Walter and Mary Sherba; she enjoyed a loving upbringing. Jean had an adventurous spirit, so in 1957 she moved to Saskatoon, SK, to attend Bethel Bible College. After graduating with a Diploma in Theology in 1960, Jean went to work for the City of Saskatoon Social Services Department. Jean met the love of her life, Wilbur, in Saskatoon and they were married on October 30, 1965. They started their new life together on the farm in Naicam, SK. They remained until 2013, when they sold the farm and moved to Airdrie, AB, to be closer to family. They moved to Calgary in 2017. Jean had a deep faith that was reflected in everything she did. She was caring, compassionate, and hospitable. She served in Women’s Ministries and as treasurer at her church. Jean had a passion for music and was on the Naicam Music Festival Committee for years. Jean was organized and efficient. She did the accounting work for several organizations and was the bookkeeper for the farming business. Jean was a lifelong learner. Although she grew up as a city girl, she became an avid gardener, developing her flower gardens into a park-like setting. While spending winters in Arizona, Jean took writing classes and authored her Life Story. This 90-page book was dedicated to her grandchildren and is now a cherished memento.

Jean is survived by her loving husband Wilbur, her two sons and daughters-in-law, Cal and Kerry Johnson of Airdrie, AB, and Dwayne and Jennifer Johnson of Bentley, AB; and seven grandchildren, Mark, Jared, Matthew, Joshua, Caleb, Luke, and Abigail. Jean is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Lynne Sherba of Mississauga, ON, and two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth Grewe of Winnipeg, MB, and Cheryl and Josh Barber of Manotick, ON. Jean was predeceased by her daughter Carolyn in 1990, and her parents, Walter and Mary Sherba.
